Gentle Dental Care

At Farmington Dental and Orthodontics, we want our patients to feel relaxed from the moment they walk in the door to the moment they leave our practice. Whether it’s before, during, or after your appointment, we have the comforts necessary to make your visit with us an enjoyable one.

Anesthetics & Sedation

For some people, no matter how gentle the staff or how comfortable the office, dental anxiety can be a paralyzing issue. We understand that many times, this all-too-real fear of dental treatment can stop people from visiting the dentist entirely. The team at Farming Dental and Orthodontics doesn’t want anything standing in the way of people getting the healthcare they need to maintain a healthy smile for years to come, so we offer two types of anesthesia and sedation to take any stress and fear out of your appointment. With both, you will remain awake during the process, so you can still converse with our staff if need be.

Nitrous Oxide

You are probably more familiar with nitrous oxide by its common name, “laughing gas.” It’s a sweet-smelling, colorless gas that you safely inhale and leaves you feeling relaxed, and even giddy. With this option, you’ll be able to sit through your visit with ease, as your worries about any dental treatment slip away. After the treatment is done, you’ll be feeling back to normal in just a few minutes.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Stronger than nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation is another option we provide to help you relax. It’s administered through a prescribed pill that you take about an hour before your appointment, meaning you’ll feel worry-free by the time you sit down to get started. This form of sedation takes around 3 hours to wear off, so it’s important to get someone to take you home after your visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I a good candidate for sedation dentistry?

Sedation works well for just about anyone who wants to feel more relaxed in the dental chair. If you are interested in utilizing dental sedation, our team will go over your medical history and any medications you’re taking to ensure that dental sedation will be safe for you. Patient safety is our top priority, so we always keep the safety and best interests of our patients in mind above everything else.

What dental procedures offer sedation options?

Dental sedation can be used in combination with just about any dental procedure. Some patients with dental anxiety choose to use sedation for routine appointments to simply relieve their anxious thoughts and feel more relaxed. For certain procedures like oral surgery, sedation is highly recommended to block pain and make the memory of the appointment fuzzy or nonexistent. If you have any questions about using dental sedation for specific treatments, feel free to contact our office.

Is sedation dentistry safe?

Farmington Dental & Orthodontics utilizes nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation, which are both very safe and effective sedation options. Safety is generally more of a concern when a patient has to be rendered unconscious, as there can be rare complications associated with general anesthesia. You may experience a few mild side effects as a result of using laughing gas or oral conscious sedation, but they are still considered safe to use.

Is sedation dentistry covered by insurance?

Dental sedation is not always covered by insurance, especially if a provider deems it unnecessary for a treatment. At Farmington Dental & Orthodontics, we understand that dental sedation can work wonders for patients who have a hard time getting through dentist appointments for any number of reasons. If you are interested in utilizing dental sedation but you’re worried about cost, please reach out to our office so we can assist. Our practice offers and accepts numerous payment options, including payment plans through CareCredit® and in-house financing.
