What Is the Dental Implant Process?

Are you looking for a tooth replacement option that is as close to a natural tooth as possible in both looks and function? If so, then a dental implant may be the right choice for you! But before getting your heart set on a dental implant, there are multiple factors to consider, including your jawbone density, lifestyle habits, and budget. Read on to learn more.

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a tooth replacement option that consists of two parts: a titanium rod surgically inserted into the jawbone that acts as a replacement root, and a crown, bridge, or dentures that go over the rod as a replacement tooth. Dental implants are a good solution for those who are missing one tooth or multiple teeth.

The Dental Implant Process

During your first appointment, your jawbone density will need to be evaluated. A strong jaw is necessary to support the dental implant and reduce the chance of implant failure. Sometimes, a weak jaw can be strengthened by a bone graft. Once you’re cleared for the implant procedure, the titanium rod can be inserted in your gums. You’ll then need to wait several months until the rod properly fuses to your jawbone. This healing period is critical for a successful outcome. Once healed, you will receive your tooth restoration to complete your beautiful new smile. We’ll also want to see you for routine checkups to follow-up on how your implant is holding up and if your oral health is in good condition.

Caring for Your Dental Implants

As the implant site heals, clean your other teeth very gently to prevent bacteria buildup. You’ll also want to eat soft foods and liquids for a while to avoid irritation of the surgery site. Once you have your restoration, you can treat your implant just as you would a regular tooth. This means that you can brush it, floss around it, and enjoy the foods you normally do without having to really think twice about it!

A healthy mouth is imperative to keeping your implant securely anchored in your jawbone. Caring for your implant, neighboring teeth, and gums will allow your implant to last upwards of 10-15 years. Commit to keeping up with your daily at-home oral hygiene and twice yearly dental appointments. Additionally, consume a balanced diet, drink plenty of water, and avoid tobacco products.

From the time I walked through the door I was treated with understanding & kindness. Everyone that I dealt with are very knowledgeable, patient & kind. I had avoided dentists longer than I care to admit but once I found Nick Dollar I will never look for another dentist. I recommend his office to ANYONE who is looking for a dentist. No one asked me to give a review...I did it because I truly believe in his work, people skills & staff is top notch. I usually dont take this kind of time for reviews but they are worth it.

So I’ve neglected going to the dentist for half my life and I decided to go here because this was the last place I went when I was 16. They still had me on file, Toni at the front desk was more than helpful. Full of laughter. The coffee machine was on point. And Ashley in the back made the scary experience enjoyable and full of positives that I will surely carry with me. See y’all at my deep clean.

I've been going to Farmington Dental for years and have never had a negative experience. I only write this review now because I had a particularly helpful visit. While there for a routine cleaning, I got to talking with Kristin about the microbiology classes I teach. She made some observations that inspired me to approach the latter half of the semester differently, and it was a super helpful change! I guess all that is to say that the workers are competent...but also pleasant and helpful. :P

I’ve had traumatic dental experiences in the past and am unfortunately one of those people who require a little more juice to get fully numbed. Farmington Dental not only managed to numb me completely but also prescribed an anxiety medication for the visit which helped ease the tension of getting in the chair. This is one of two dental experiences I can remember without experiencing pain and the other experience I was asleep. I’ll definitely be going back.
