Why Do I Get Cavities So Easily?

Here are some of the reasons why you might develop a cavity:

1. You’re Not Using the Right Dental Tools and Technique

Brushing too hard or brushing with hard bristles can damage your enamel and cause gum recession. Be mindful to brush gently for two minutes using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Carefully brush all the sides of every tooth, your gumline, and your tongue. Many electric toothbrushes have a built-in two-minute timer and pressure sensor that can make brushing easier if your mind tends to wander.

You should also floss every day! Floss removes bacteria and food particles from between your teeth and from under your gums that your toothbrush can’t reach.

2. You Have a Sugar-Rich Diet

The more you snack on and drink foods and beverages rich in sugar, the greater your chance of developing cavities. Bad bacteria in the mouth eat sugar, carbohydrates, and starch. Then they produce harmful acids that strip the minerals from your enamel. Because adequate minerals are critical for strong enamel, demineralized enamel is weak. If the area of weakened enamel is not fortified, it will progress into a hole called a cavity.

Whenever possible, choose water instead of soda and juice, and fresh fruit and vegetables instead of processed snacks and candy.

3. You Have Dry Mouth

Your saliva plays an important role in fighting off cavities. Saliva washes away the plaque and food particles in our mouth that can lead to decay and cavities. It also hardens weakened enamel by depositing minerals onto the surface of your teeth. Having a dry mouth means you don’t produce enough saliva. Your teeth will experience more demineralization than remineralization and your mouth becomes more habitable to bacteria.

4. It Runs in the Family

Some families are more prone to developing cavities than others due to genetics and/or shared lifestyle habits.

5. You Skip Your Routine Dental Visits

Regular dental cleanings allow us to scrape away built-up plaque and tartar that can cause cavities and gum disease. We recommend visiting us at least every six months!

From the time I walked through the door I was treated with understanding & kindness. Everyone that I dealt with are very knowledgeable, patient & kind. I had avoided dentists longer than I care to admit but once I found Nick Dollar I will never look for another dentist. I recommend his office to ANYONE who is looking for a dentist. No one asked me to give a review...I did it because I truly believe in his work, people skills & staff is top notch. I usually dont take this kind of time for reviews but they are worth it.

So I’ve neglected going to the dentist for half my life and I decided to go here because this was the last place I went when I was 16. They still had me on file, Toni at the front desk was more than helpful. Full of laughter. The coffee machine was on point. And Ashley in the back made the scary experience enjoyable and full of positives that I will surely carry with me. See y’all at my deep clean.

I've been going to Farmington Dental for years and have never had a negative experience. I only write this review now because I had a particularly helpful visit. While there for a routine cleaning, I got to talking with Kristin about the microbiology classes I teach. She made some observations that inspired me to approach the latter half of the semester differently, and it was a super helpful change! I guess all that is to say that the workers are competent...but also pleasant and helpful. :P

I’ve had traumatic dental experiences in the past and am unfortunately one of those people who require a little more juice to get fully numbed. Farmington Dental not only managed to numb me completely but also prescribed an anxiety medication for the visit which helped ease the tension of getting in the chair. This is one of two dental experiences I can remember without experiencing pain and the other experience I was asleep. I’ll definitely be going back.
