Is Sedation Dentistry Safe? | Farmington Dental & Orthodontics

At Farmington Dental & Orthodontics, we offer sedation dentistry to help make your visit more enjoyable. For example, dental sedation can be used to ease dental anxiety or to make long, complex dental procedures more comfortable.

Rest assured that patient safety is our priority! While we consider sedation dentistry a safe procedure for most patients, our team will discuss your medical history, medications, and other pertinent information to ensure that you are a suitable candidate.

What Type of Sedation Dentistry is Available?

At Farmington Dental & Orthodontics, we offer two different dental sedation options:

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas”, is a great option for mild to moderate dental anxiety. This is a gas that you inhale via a mask over your nose. It will help you feel calm and relaxed throughout your treatment. Your limbs may also start to feel a bit heavy. Once you stop inhaling the gas, its effects wear off. You don’t have any lingering drowsiness or mental fog, so it’s safe to drive yourself home after your appointment.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation is another option to help you relax at the dentist. It’s a prescribed pill you will take before your appointment. This form of dental sedation is stronger than nitrous oxide so you will feel its effects for several hours. Since you will be drowsy after your treatment, it’s important you arrange to have someone drive you home after your appointment. You may also experience some temporary side effects like dry mouth, dizziness, or nausea.

Everyone that I dealt with are very knowledgeable, patient & kind. I had avoided dentists longer than I care to admit but once I found Nick Dollar I will never look for another dentist. I recommend his office to ANYONE who is looking for a dentist. No one asked me to give a review...I did it because I truly believe in his work, people skills & staff is top notch. So I’ve neglected going to the dentist for half my life and I decided to go here because this was the last place I went when I was 16. They still had me on file, Toni at the front desk was more than helpful. Full of laughter. The coffee machine was on point. I only write this review now because I had a particularly helpful visit. While there for a routine cleaning, I got to talking with Kristin about the microbiology classes I teach. She made some observations that inspired me to approach the latter half of the semester differently, and it was a super helpful change! I guess all that is to say that the workers are competent...but also pleasant and helpful. :P

I’ve had traumatic dental experiences in the past and am unfortunately one of those people who require a little more juice to get fully numbed. Farmington Dental not only managed to numb me completely but also prescribed an anxiety medication for the visit which helped ease the tension of getting in the chair. This is one of two dental experiences I can remember without experiencing pain and the other experience I was asleep. I’ll definitely be going back.

I've been going to Farmington Dental for years and have never had a negative experience. I only write this review now because I had a particularly helpful visit.
